Our streamlined evaluation process is built on these four layers:
Scope and Purpose
The Reach Virginia Model is built on research that shows high-quality mentoring programs have the potential to improve the retention of new teachers, increase the effectiveness of new teachers in student learning, and expand teacher leadership opportunities.
Funding for this grant is targeted to the elements of mentoring programs listed below.
An outside evaluator, Arroyo Research Services, assists REACH Virginia staff in identifying patterns that lead to program success. These include:

School divisions in the REACH Virginia consortium receive a “for your eyes only” evaluation of their school divisions’ mentor teacher program. Annually, each member has the opportunity to submit the following data to Reach Virginia staff using common forms and surveys. An annual Evaluation Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the data.
Audiences
School divisions in the Reach Virginia consortium receive an annual report showing patterns across all districts. Each division receives a separate report of its individual data.
Data Collection Process
Annually, each grantee is required to submit the following data to Reach Virginia staff using common forms and survey. An annual Evaluation Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the data.
1. Mentor Survey, Spring
An electronic survey of each school division’s mentors will be open in April each year.
2. Mentee Survey, Spring
An electronic survey of each school division’s beginning teachers will open in April of each year.
3. Mentor Program Leader Survey, Spring
An electronic survey of each Mentor Program Leader will open in April of each year.
4. Retention Data Form
A downloadable form submitted electronically by September 30th each year to track new teacher retention.
Data Analysis
Outcomes for program evaluation are focused on programs to deliver new teacher mentor training. The evaluation provides overall patterns of practice from which individual divisions can compare results and learn from each other.
Arroyo Research Services
Arroyo Research Services (ARS), contracted by REACH Virginia, provides an annual evaluation report prepared by ARS in collaboration with REACH Virginia staff. ARS provides REACH Virginia with regular advice and counsel regarding research program and evaluation needs. Kirk Vandersall, the founder, contributes to this work and regularly attends the biannual Reach Virginia meetings.
